Cooking with Cannabis, 7 Easy Recipes

The Peak Oklahoma

The world of marijuana offers a great variety of different ways to consume the medicinally based plant. While any consumers prefer to consume their cannabis through traditional means such as smoking the plant, edibles offer another wonderful options for patients.

The world of edibles can be experienced and perhaps should be experienced from a licensed manufacturer to start since edibles can oftentimes be 10 to 15 times more potent than smoking cannabis. With that being said, many patients who fall in love with edibles will want to make their own. To do so, patients should first understand how edible potency works, prior to selection an edible recipe to make at home.

With that in mind, let’s dive in and take a closer look at how to cook with cannabis.

Calculating Edible Potency

Edibles can be a bit harder when being baked at home. Without the medical marijuana testing offered to Oklahoma medical marijuana dispensaries, it is far more difficult to know the dosage of your edible. With that said, patients want to be extra cautious when eating a homemade edible. Here are five tips that can help to ensure you have a good experience when you make a homemade edible.

  • First, start with a low dosage. When making a homemade edible, use a lower dosage. This will help ensure you find the perfect dosage of each batch of edibles that you make. Remember, low and slow!
  • Remember, each batch of edibles can be slightly different than the last. With different potencies for different strains of cannabis, the same amount of cannabis does not mean that it is the same potency in your edibles. Since edibles are measured in milligrams for their dosage, it is easy to see a large change in edible potency based upon different strains of cannabis being used as an input for your edibles.
  • Start with tested edibles until you completely know your preferred dosage. Again making edibles at home can lead to a wide variance in potency. Therefore, it is best you learn your preferred dosage for edibles based upon products which are both bought from an Oklahoma medical marijuana dispensary as these products have already been properly tested.
  • Patients should only eat edibles when they are good to sleep at the location where they are enjoying their edible. This is especially true for homemade edibles to start off with. When you first start off with edibles you want to make sure you are in a good spot if you eat too much.
  • Finally, as a reminder to be sure you lock up your edibles well so they are not mistakenly eaten by someone else, be it a loved one or a pet!

Edible Recipes

Classic Brownies

We found an easy brownies recipe which only needs the normal brownie ingredients.

First, you want to take the time to infuse a stick of butter by placing it in a crock pot along with ground up cannabis flower. Personally, I like to set the crock pot on the low setting and let it run for about 6 to 8 hours before straining the cannabis out of the butter and letting it dry. A good trick for this portion will be to mix in water to get the last bits of cannabis and butter out of the crock pot. Then let the buttery water mixture cool down in the fridge and the butter will naturally separate from the water into different blocks for easy removal of your cannabis butter!
Then mix the brownie ingredients together and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. You’ll be able to find precise directions from the link here. After mixing the ingredients together, pour into an 8×8 pan and cook for approximately 20 minutes or until the center of the brownies are set.

Peanut Butter Firecrackers

This particular cannabis infusion process does involve peanut butter so naturally it should be avoided for patients that have peanut allegories! With that said, it is a fast and easy way to make your own homemade edible treats. For this recipe, simply take a cracker and add a little peanut butter to the top of it. Then do the same to another crack and sprinkle some ground up cannabis flower onto the peanut butter. Then bake in the oven for around 25 minutes on 325 degrees. It works great if you take the time to wrap the peanut cracker sandwich in aluminum foil to catch any peanut butter than runs off during the baking process. While this edible does leave the actual cannabis flower intact while you eat it, it also touts the easiest preparation on the entire list!

Olive Oil

Another classic move for cannabis enthusiasts to make their own edibles will be infusion into olive oil. The great aspect with cannabis-infused olive oil is the fact it can be added to such a wide variety of different foods for you to enjoy. For the infusion process, simply take your favorite brand of olive oil and pour it into either a double boiler or a simple stove-top pot. Then slowly heat the oil and ground cannabis mixture together for a few hours (keeping it below 425 degrees as to not damage the precious THC or cannabis). After cooking and infusing the oil, we then recommend using cheesecloth to remove the oil from the cannabis. Then you are all set to enjoy infused oil for your favorite food pairings!

Green Baked Pie

This particular recipe certainly will turn eyes as the cannabis butter will turn the entire pie crush green with preparation with cannabis flower. This recipe will require butter and you will be using the infused canna-butter to create your pie crust. Then you can fill the pie with your favorite pie filling weather that is apple, cherry, chocolate, or something of the sort. Essentially, for this recipe, you will follow along with the traditional pie crust recipe and simply replace the butter with canna-butter. It is one of our favorites though as it truly pops when you pull it out of the oven and although it takes a bit longer to make than other recipes on the list, it certainly can be well worth it!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ahh, classic chocolate chip cookies certainly bring about the delight of enjoying them. This recipe again requires you to infuse your butter with cannabis prior to starting. With that said, you can find an easy chocolate chip cookie recipe here. This recipe may be perfect for those looking to start cooking their own edibles since you can make the cookies different sizes depending on how big of a dosage you would like. We are a huge fan of how the chocolate chips cover the taste of the cannabis butter in this recipe as well!

Apple Pie

Another very exciting recipe which will bring the wow factor after making, an infused apple pie! This is a perfect treat for the holidays- or should be say holidaze? Ha! All puns aside, you can make an infused apple pie with cannabis butter and simply following any pie recipe. You will want to make your own crust as then you can use the cannabis butter as the foundation to the entire pie. For bonus point on this recipe, consider making at op for the pie crust to go over the filling. This will make each bite of your infused apple pie pack that much more of a medical marijuana punch!

Whipped Cream

This can be an extremely challenging edible to make but certainly something that brings a bit of a wow factor! Since cannabis must be infused into a fattie compound, the cream with whipped cream is perfect. The trick to this recipe though is to have an electric mixer otherwise it is nearly impossible to whip by hand!! The trick here with the cannabis aspect is to infuse the cream with cannabis. To this point, Martha Stewart has a wonderful blog on how to make infused whipped cream and we must say- we could not say it better than her!

Cooking with cannabis can be wonderful!  Nonetheless as mentioned, if you are new to the wonderful world of cannabis edibles then it is recommended that you start with industry tested and produced edibles first. Make sure you understand that the dosage for edibles, which can be trickier than cannabis flower dosing since edibles take around 90 minutes to kick in. The more you understand before baking your own edibles, the more apt you will be to have a positive experience.

Finally, remember that edibles have a strong and long lasting effect. We encourage you to ask us about edible dosing if you ever have any questions. We with The Peak Dispensary are always happy to help where we can!

Until next time, Stay well!
